Officials gearing up to raise cash for border fence Arizona officials are gearing up to launch a new website on July 20 to accept donations to pay for the construction of additional fencing along the state's portion of the U.S.-Mexico border. Under legislation approved in April, the state will use donations of materials and prison labor to build more fencing along parts of the border. Republican lawmakers have backed fencing bills and proposed ways to fund the fencing in light of illegal immigration and rising violence. State Sen. Steve Smith, the bill's sponsor, said the website would launch on July 20. This was part of the fencing law passed by the Arizona Legislature during the 2011 regular session.
