University tuition fees information The Ministry of Education’s website announced The Ministry of Education will set up a new website on the 30th to publish tuition information of various universities and colleges, allowing students and parents to compare the tuition fees of various schools, the extent of tuition increases, and the actual fees they will pay. The Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 stipulates that the Department of Education must publish information including the schools with the highest and lowest tuition fees, the schools with the highest and lowest tuition increases in the past two years, and the schools with the highest and lowest net prices. Actual costs refer to the actual tuition and fees paid by full-time students after calculating financial aid, such as grants and scholarships. Classifications of schools include public and private, for-profit and non-profit, four-year and two-year colleges and universities. The schools with the most expensive tuition and the largest increases in each category must explain to the Ministry of Education the reasons for their high fees and their plans for improvement. According to this information, the average tuition at four-year nonprofit colleges was $21,324 in the 2009-10 academic year, but the most expensive schools were much higher, with Bates College, a private school in Maine, costing the most at $51,300; Wells College in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York; College) is the school with the highest cost increase in the past two years, up 67%; California's Art Center College of Design is the school with the highest actual cost after receiving financial aid, with a cost of $29,672. Adams, the Bates spokesman, questioned the Department of Education's methodology, noting that the school and the other four highest-paying schools list tuition and fees as including room and board, while other schools calculate tuition and fees separately. The average tuition at four-year public universities and colleges is $10,747, with Penn State University having the highest tuition at $14,416; Northern New Mexico College having the highest tuition increase at 51%, and Texas Health Science Center University at San Antonio having the highest actual cost at $24,192. Education Department officials acknowledged the limitations of the information. In addition to inconsistent calculation methods, only the top and bottom 5 percent of schools in each category are listed, leaving the middle 90 percent unmentioned.
