Tucson Unified School District was fined for failing to complete teaching hours. The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) was fined $1.9 million for failing to provide adequate instructional time for seventh and eighth grade students during the 2008-2010 school year after a state Department of Education audit found it failed. School districts must meet student enrollment and attendance rates to receive aid from the state Department of Education. In addition, school districts must provide students with a number of legally required instructional hours. The audit found that 17 of the Tucson Unified School District's 26 schools failed to provide the required 1,068 instructional hours for seventh- and eighth-grade students that year. The Arizona Daily Star said the school district has 30 days to appeal.
