"U.S. News & World Report" magazine announced the new annual American university rankings on Tuesday, with Harvard University and Princeton University tied for first place. This year's list of American universities has little change in the top ten, with the Ivy League schools occupying the top positions. Harvard took the top spot last year, and this year Princeton has caught up to share the top spot. Another change is that the University of Chicago, which ranked ninth last year, jumped four levels this year and tied for fifth with four other universities. The U.S. News & World Report's university rankings are based on seven criteria: reputation of undergraduate education and academic standards, undergraduate retention and graduation rates, college resources, admissions results, average financial resource investment by students, graduation results, and alumni donations. The magazine began ranking universities in the United States in 1983 and is the originator of university rankings. However, the basic pattern of rankings has not changed much over the years, and the use of quantitative indicators to rank universities has always been controversial. The magazine emphasizes that the rankings can provide a reference for high school students to find the university that suits them. The top ten universities in the United States are 1. Harvard University, 1. Princeton University, 3. Yale University, 4. Columbia University, 5. California Institute of Technology, 5. MIT, 5. Stanford University, 5. University of Chicago, 5. University of Pennsylvania, 10. Duke University.
