A temple in Phoenix called the "Goddess Temple" was discovered to be a brothel after a half-year undercover investigation. The police have arrested 20 men and women involved in the case. But Phoenix Police Department spokesman Steve Martos said authorities are still hunting for the 17 people involved in the case who are absconding. The 20 people arrested have been charged with prostitution and other crimes. During the search on Wednesday, the police obtained evidence that the male and female "caregivers" working at the temple were engaged in prostitution in the name of "raising donations" for the temple; and they were even doing so under the guise of "neo tantric" therapy. Complaints from neighbors, a newspaper report, and information on the temple's website brought police to the attention and began an undercover investigation. Matos said: "What is different about this brothel is that they disguise themselves as a temple and use religious freedom to carry out criminal activities of prostitution." Matos said: "Of course we respect the rights given to the people by the First Amendment of the Constitution. But religious freedom does not mean they can use it to commit crimes." Matos told reporters that this "temple" brothel earns hundreds of thousands a month. The website of this "goddess temple" says: "Sex is sacred and a healing force at the core of life. Once we open our arms to sex instead of rejecting it, we will appear successful, happy and powerful." The website also publishes photos of naked women, marking their states under the "Goddess" column. The temple's "old man", 50-year-old Tracy Elise, has been arrested and charged with prostitution, unlawful control, pimping and running a brothel. The temple is located in downtown Phoenix and also has an office in Sadhana. This office was probably where prostitutes rested and slept.
