> Maricopa County Community College has completely banned smoking (Alberta Times) Starting next year, the Maricopa County Community College System will ban all tobacco products to help improve the health of students and staff and keep campuses clean. According to the original regulations, smoking was strictly prohibited in all buildings on campus, but the college had designated smoking areas. As of July 1, no tobacco products can be found on 10 campuses, including branch campuses and two skills training centers, and the college's main office in Tempe. In the state, one in four people aged 18 to 24 are smokers, which is higher than the national average for this age group. In 2006, state voters approved a statewide ban on smoking in public places, and the Arizona Smoke-Free Act officially took effect in 2007. Maricopa County's 10 community colleges have approximately 142,000 students and 8,800 full-time and part-time teachers and staff. The county community college board hopes the move will inspire smokers to kick the habit and reduce the spread of secondhand smoke.
