Rep. Judy Baggs has been selected to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Scott Bondja in the Senate. Last week, Republican Rep. Judy Baggs and prosecuting attorneys Eli Spencer and Lyle Tuttle were nominated to replace Scotbondja. Their names were sent to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for review, and the Board of Supervisors ultimately selected Judy Baggs. Last year, Bondja had an argument with his girlfriend while driving on the highway. The two got out of the car and quarreled and fought, leaving both sides with bruises. Although Bondja was suspected of domestic violence and drunk driving, he identified himself as a parliamentarian when the police arrived and asked to have his handcuffs removed. He was released home that night, while his girlfriend spent the night in jail. Bondea was later indicted and charged with a misdemeanor and expressed "no contest". Finally, on the 6th of this month, he resigned as the majority leader and member of the state Senate. The chain reaction caused by the case also included that another senator, Jarradou, introduced a bill calling for amending the state constitution to abolish the immunity of members. The state constitution prohibits the arrest of lawmakers during or 15 days before the session unless they commit "treason, felony, or breach of the peace."
