Police have recently cracked down on car theft, with the Mesa Police Department and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office arresting two car thieves last week. Last Monday, Mesa police arrested a 43-year-old woman and on Thursday, MCSO arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with vehicle thefts. Both men were transported to the Fourth Avenue Detention Facility. Sgt. Judy Martinez of the Mesa Police Department said that starting in 2003, Arizona law enforcement agencies used police cars as decoys to combat auto theft and vehicle break-ins. In 2011, one in eight cars was stolen in Arizona, making it one of the states with the highest number of lost cars in the country.
