A 25-year-old North Phoenix resident was arrested early Friday morning after he violently shook his 3-month-old son, causing the baby to suffer severe brain damage. Police said the Phoenix Fire Department received a report of an injured infant at 11 p.m. Thursday. Paramedics arrived at the scene and took the injured to hospital. Hospital officials notified police early Friday morning that the baby showed signs of abuse. A hospital spokesman said the baby boy remained in critical condition as of Friday afternoon. A spokesman for the Phoenix police said that the baby boy's father, Sean, admitted under questioning that he was angry because the baby boy was crying in the store. He shook the baby vigorously several times in front of the child's mother and grandmother. Shane was taken to the Maricopa County Jail to be charged with child abuse. Doctors remind parents that shaking a newborn baby generally will not cause life-threatening injuries. Excessive force may cause cervical dislocation, leading to apnea and death. In addition, the baby's brain tissue is not fully developed and is easily shaken by external forces. In severe cases, the brain tissue may be damaged.
