Experts remind drivers: There are many car accidents on tax day. According to "USA Today", drivers rushing to the post office before the deadline may be one of the reasons. Researchers say it's also possible that the stress of filing taxes distracts drivers, causing human error. They looked at 30 years of data and found there were 6,783 crash fatalities on tax day, an average of 226 per day. This compares to an average of 213 starts per day in the week leading up to the date. Typically, the number of car crash deaths on tax day, April 15, is 6% higher than the number of car crash deaths on other days in April. Report author Redmire said that an additional 13 fatal accidents a day would cost society $40 million a year. That estimate includes loss of life, injuries and property damage. The researchers analyzed data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The findings were published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. More drivers on the road and more people taking routes they don't take every day may be why tax day is risky, said Rudd, a spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Other studies say binge drinking may increase deaths on other holidays, such as Super Bowl Sunday, the Fourth of July and Election Day.
