More people are shot in Arizona than killed in car crashes (Alberta Times) More people are shot in Arizona than killed in car crashes, according to a report from the Violence Control Center. Local safety advocates are asking lawmakers to reconsider the state's gun control laws. According to relevant information, in 2009, the most complete data available, 856 people were shot and killed that year. In the same year, 809 people were killed in car accidents, making Arizona the ninth state with the most gun deaths in the country. "This problem is very serious in Arizona," said Heidi Saro, president of Arizona Gun Safety. "This report doesn't tell us what we can do to solve it." Saro said that under the supervision of the transportation department, increased publicity, such as the mandatory use of seat belts and child restraints, has had good effects. She said the same regulations apply to gun control. But not everyone agrees with her. State Rep. Frank Anthony of Tucson believes that Saro's organization has a clear goal of banning guns. Arizona has always followed the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and lives in the Wild West, where people understand the purpose of guns. Anthony added that using “pseudo-scientific” data like the Violence Control Center’s does not allow for a fair and impartial assessment of gun deaths. In addition, the Alberta Rifle and Pistol Association said they support gun restrictions to protect more children from gun harm.
