A Tucson teacher gave a girl a "no homework award" and angered parents (Alberta Times) A teacher at a Tucson school awarded an 8-year-old girl a "disaster award" for having the most excuses for not completing her homework. The girl's mother, Christina Valdez, was dissatisfied and told local television station KGUN桾V on May 31 that her daughter Cassandra Sia brought home a paper "medal" from school one day. The "medal" looks like a colorful card that reads: "You're the best! Disaster award. Awarded to Sandra Garcia. For the most excuses for not completing your homework." Garcia's classroom teacher signed the card "Ms. Plowman," with the date "May 18, 2012" and a smiley face. The teacher awarded the "award" to Garcia in front of the whole class, causing the whole class to burst into laughter. Valdez later approached the school principal and received the reply that it was "just a joke." Valdez said: "I think this is a cruel thing and should not be given to children such an 'award.'" Garcia has no problem completing homework and participates in an after-school tutoring class. School officials declined to speak to the media about the incident.
