Phoenix school district refuses to lay pipes in school (Alberta Times) The Phoenix school district has rejected a thousands-dollar proposal to lay pipes in an elementary school. The Balsz School District board voted unanimously against plans by Freescale Semiconductor to build a pipeline for wastewater treatment under Brunson Lee Elementary School. Superintendent Jeff Smith said trust from the community was more important than financial gain. Freescale offers a year's rent of 20,000 yuan. Parents and community residents say they are concerned about the risk of cancer-causing toxins leaking from the plant's equipment, despite assurances from state and federal environmental agencies. The pipeline will help discharge wastewater from a factory owned by Motorola. The plant began leaking toxic chemicals in 1982.
