Governor Brewer said she opposes the proposed increase in the state sales tax.
In June, a tax increase petition was sent to the state asking for more voters to vote on a permanent one-cent sales tax increase in the November general election. The proposal recommends that the revenue raised by the government tax increase be used to make up for the shortfall in funding for education and other designated services.
Secretary of State Ken Bennett has declared the petition invalid because it was improperly worded. But supporters said they would fight in court.
Brewer said she opposes a sales tax increase because the authority to raise taxes should rest with the Legislature. Only the Legislature has the authority to decide how to balance the budget and spending priorities.
Brewer won voter approval for a temporary increase in the state sales tax in 2010 that expired in mid-2013.
