Strong Arpaio and Barbu were re-elected (Alberta Times) Joe Arpaio, the self-proclaimed most powerful police chief in the United States, won the re-election... Arpaio won re-election and will begin his sixth term as Maricopa County Sheriff. Joe Apao, born June 14, 1932, was first elected as Maricopa County Sheriff in 1992. Since 2005, he has responded to state legislators by adopting tough anti-illegal immigration measures, which became the legislative basis for SB1070. For this reason, Arpaio was hated by the Hispanic community, and a gang once offered bonuses to buy his head. Hispanic groups have also filed a federal lawsuit against him, and the U.S. Department of Justice recently accused Arpaio and his subordinates of discriminating against Hispanics. In addition, Apao also questioned President Obama's birth certificate. He claimed that the birth certificate Obama presented to the public was a forgery. In Pinal County, south of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Republican incumbent Sheriff Paul Babeu also won a second term. Babu is considered an ally of Apao in his fight against illegal immigration.
