> Mayor Avondale is sworn in as chairman of the National League of Cities (Alberta Times) Avondale Mayor Mary Looper Rogers took office this month as president of the National League of Cities for a one-year term. The National League of Cities is a collaborative initiative founded in 1926 with only 37 states and 21 cities participating. Over time, the organization's membership has expanded to 49 states across the country, with 19,000 cities, towns and village members. Rogers, 64, is the league's first Latino president in 25 years. The last person in the state to hold the position was former state Attorney General Terry Gold. When Gaude was president of the alliance in 1988, Arizona politics was engulfed in strife when then-Governor Evan Mecum decided to revoke Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a statutory holiday, which was later made a holiday again with voter approval in 1992. Rogers also faces a lot of problems now. Since the legislation of SB1070, Arizona has been considered a stronghold of anti-Hispanics and anti-immigration. Then, Governor Brewer’s accusation of President Obama was stirred up by the national media. Sheriff Arpaio was also accused by the Department of Justice, and Sheriff Arpaio insisted on clinging to President Obama’s birth certificate. A series of contradictions have had a negative impact on the state. Rogers said that after taking office, she will work to advocate immigration reform and resolve border disputes and water supply issues.
