Cold weather affects the price of vegetables in the state. Agricultural experts said on Monday that lettuce and other lettuce-type vegetables are expected to be more expensive than in previous years as cold weather affects vegetable growth in southwestern Arizona. Vegetable farmers in Yuma, a base for green leafy vegetables in Honshu and several southwestern states, usually plant lettuce from November to March every year. But this winter, due to the cold weather and occasional frosts, the growth of lettuce has been slow. Vegetables grow slowly and prices are bound to rise. The price of lettuce in the Yuma area this time of year is about a dollar, and this week it was $1.99. Half a month ago, a box of lettuce cost about US$7 to US$8, which rose to about US$20 on Monday. In addition to lettuce, the prices of vegetables such as spinach, cauliflower and broccoli have also been affected, and the prices of fruits such as citrus remain high.
