The Republicans push school employees to carry guns to protect schools (Alberta Times) Arizona Attorney General Tom Horn and Republican Party legislators are pushing a bill to allow the state's public school principals, teachers and school staff to carry guns to protect school safety. The proposal was sponsored by Republican Congressman David Stevens. Stevens said his goal is to ensure the safety of public schools and get more teachers and staff trained to participate in the work of protecting campuses. Stevens said that if this proposal passes, it will be more feasible and less expensive than sending armed police officers to 2,000 public schools across the state. The state government wants to send an armed police officer to every public school, but has faced budget pressures. Andrew Morrill, president of the Arizona Education Association, objected. He believes this is a wrong decision and that school staff cannot be put on duty with as little as 24 hours of training to replace well-trained members of the disciplined forces. Some opponents also believe that if these principals and teachers walk around campus wearing guns on weekdays, will they cause panic to students? Who can guarantee that these school guards armed with guns have no motive to kill? State Inspector General Tom Horn expressed support for the proposal. He explained that school janitors do not carry guns to work. The guns are usually locked in specific places on campus. In the event of a terrorist incident, school janitors with guns can immediately take out their weapons to fight against terrorists. Horn said that many retired police officers and veterans are currently working as security guards in schools. He hopes to leverage the strengths of these people and provide multiple options for the state government to address employment opportunities for veterans. Comment: It seems that retired police officers and veterans have played a large role in gun homicides in recent years. Mr. Attorney General, do you want them to be stationed in schools? Your child must not be in a public school, right?
