According to foreign media reports, this is a dazzling mating dance that attracts thousands of tourists every year. Nature lovers stroll along a trail called Elkmont to watch countless fireflies put on a "?#28783; light show." Such an experience is a spiritual enjoyment. Elkmont is a trail leading into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

For two weeks every June, these beetles fly in the sky with bright lights, forming an amazing scenery. This display of light transforms the forest into a scene from James Cameron's science fiction film "Avatar." The National Park Service says these fireflies can only live for 21 days as adults and rely on their bioluminescence to trap prey and attract mates.

Each type of firefly has a recognizable typical flash pattern. The male fireflies flash as they fly, and the immobile females respond with bursts of flashes. They are most active during the two weeks between late May and mid-June. Daniel Carlson of North Carolina, USA, told the New York Times: "It makes people hallucinate, like a silent symphony. What's going on? How could this happen? We don't know anything."
