The U.S. military said the body of an Iraqi general was found near the U.S.-Mexico border. The general's fighter jet crashed in the Arizona desert during night training.

According to Reuters, U.S. and Iraqi government officials said search and rescue personnel found the body of Brigadier General Rasid Mohammed Sadiq Hasan at the crash site about five miles east of Douglas Municipal Airport.

Hassan was alone in an F-16 Falcon fighter jet owned by the Iraqi military. The fighter jet crashed around 8pm on Wednesday and caused a fire.

A grass fire caused by the crash was extinguished within hours. No other injuries were reported at the crash site.

Hassan is a student in the pilot training program in Tucson. These trainees come from nine different countries and are trained by the 162nd Wing of the Arizona Air National Guard.

>U.S. military authorities said that Iraqi pilots trained by the U.S. Air Force were the first to fly F-16 fighter jets belonging to Iraq. They will fly aircraft to fight against the Islamic State military group.

General Lloyd Austin, commander of the U.S. Central Command, expressed condolences to Hassan’s family.

He said in a statement: "We mourn with our partners and the Iraqi people at this difficult time."

The U.S. military said the Air Force was investigating the cause of the accident.
