Bitnet reported on July 5, 2016 that a football-loving Turkish hacker attacked multiple U.S. government and official websites, including Arizona State University, the Arizona House of Representatives and the Arizona Legislature.
The hacker changed the homepages of the three websites to pages with his personal logo, a message against the United States of America, and a logo belonging to Eskişehirspor, a Turkish football club based in Eskişehir.
This graffiti is somewhat similar to the previous incident in which Albanian hackers left football club logos on the South Yorkshire Police website. This may be because although the Euro 2016 tournament has been ongoing, the Turkish and American football teams have never met.
Here is a fully compromised page uploaded by the Turkish hacker:
It is unclear how the hacker bypassed the defense system and uploaded his own page, especially considering that the website he targeted was a high-profile government agency. However, after seeing the recent leak of the US medical database, we clearly feel that the US network security is indeed relatively weak.
During our research, we found that this hacker has been defaming various websites since 2007, but this incident is the largest damage he has caused. We also discovered that aLem! is associated with the well-known Turkish hacking group Turk Hack Team.
When this article was published, all targeted websites had been restored.
