The Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles reminds the public: Pay attention to avoid dangerous behaviors when driving in the United States. The details are as follows:
Remind: Pay attention to avoid dangerous behaviors when driving in the United States (Part 2)
7. Do not wear seat belts. Seat belts must be worn when riding in private cars, school buses and buses equipped with seat belts. Children under 8 years old or less than 4 feet 9 inches (144 centimeters) tall must use a child safety seat.
8. Do not give way to special vehicles. The law stipulates that when road vehicles encounter situations such as police cars, fire trucks, ambulance sirens or school buses flashing red lights, they should avoid and stop as soon as possible and wait for such vehicles to go ahead.
9. Ignoring pedestrian priority. When encountering pedestrians crossing the road, regardless of whether there is a traffic light at the intersection, whether the road is marked with a crosswalk or whether the pedestrian crossing the street is violating the regulations, the moving vehicle must stop at a safe distance in advance to give way. California allows bicycles on the road, but moving vehicles must keep at least 3 feet (about 1 meter) away from them. Although the law stipulates that vehicles must give way to pedestrians, there is still a risk of being hit if the driver violates the rules when crossing the street without being noticed in time. Pedestrians should pay attention to their surroundings at all times, and especially avoid distracting behaviors such as looking down at their mobile phones while walking.
> 10. Not buying insurance. Motorists must purchase automobile liability insurance to compensate the other party for their losses after an accident. California's minimum liability insurance (maximum compensation for a single accident is US$15,000, maximum coverage is US$30,000) is often not enough to cover losses, so it is recommended to purchase liability insurance that pays US$50,000 or US$100,000. You can also purchase comprehensive insurance to compensate for your own car damage and Uninsured Motorist insurance (which can compensate you for your losses when the other party has no insurance or insufficient insurance).
11. Ignore the police notice to appear in court. The document issued by the police is a Notice to Appear, and signing does not mean that you accept the penalty. If a motorist refuses to sign or argue, he or she may be arrested for obstruction of justice. Regardless of whether you have received a notice from the court, you or your client should check with the court in advance and appear in court promptly, otherwise you may be wanted for contempt of court.
> 12. Escape from car accident. If a road traffic accident occurs, no matter who is responsible, the driver must exchange driver information (driver's license), vehicle information, insurance and other relevant information with the other party, and write down the names and contact information of witnesses. You can also use your mobile phone to record the scene of the accident. When a traffic accident occurs with a vehicle parked on the roadside and the owner cannot be found, you must leave your contact information and other information on the hit car. If there are casualties in the accident, call 911 immediately and wait for ambulance personnel to arrive.
> 13. Use mobile phones. It is prohibited to hold or use mobile phones and other communication devices while driving. If you need to use it, you must use a hands-free or car Bluetooth device, but you must not wear headphones on both ears at the same time.
> 14. Store valuables in the car. Placing suitcases, handbags and other items in a car, especially in conspicuous places, can easily lead to criminals breaking windows and stealing them. In addition, the detection rate of such property theft cases is very low, and it is usually difficult to recover the losses.
