(Phoenix Overseas Chinese Federation Newsletter) The 25th China Association of the Americas and the 29th China Association, China Office, and Overseas Chinese Association Networking Conference in the United States were held in Los Angeles, the United States, from August 20 to August 22, 2012. 83 representatives from 18 countries and dozens of cities in the United States attended the conference. Zhang Zhaohong, vice chairman of the Phoenix Overseas Chinese Federation, attended the meeting and made a report on the overseas Chinese situation at the conference. The Chinese Association and the Chinese Association in the United States have a history of more than a hundred years. The Phoenix Overseas Chinese Federation has the same status as the Chinese Associations and Chinese Offices in various places. This annual conference is held under new historical conditions. The purpose of the conference has been stated in the first sentence of the declaration: "Unite the overseas Chinese community, communicate with both sides of the Taiwan Strait, promote mutual trust and create a win-win situation." It indicates that Chinese associations, Chinese offices, and overseas Chinese associations in various places will move towards new and important work directions in the future. The declaration points out: A hundred years ago, overseas Chinese living around the world, especially those in the United States and Canada, fully supported the democratic revolution led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. They mobilized overseas Chinese to raise funds for the revolution, organized overseas Chinese to return to China to join the revolutionary army, carried out various uprisings, overthrew the feudal rule of the Qing Dynasty, and established Asia's first democratic republic, the Republic of China. Many overseas Chinese destroyed their homes to express their suffering and sacrificed their lives for charity. We look back at the historical facts and prove that the founding father Dr. Sun Yat-sen's words that "overseas Chinese are the mother of the revolution" are well deserved and we are very proud of. The declaration pointed out: In recent years, the Japanese government has frequently made plans to invade and occupy Diaoyutai, the territory of the motherland; the Philippine government has also continued to intervene in incidents involving Chinese fishermen near the Nansha Islands. In the face of foreign provocations, compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share the same hatred. This annual meeting hopes that the governments on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will jointly make multi-faceted efforts to safeguard territorial sovereignty and not allow foreign aggression. The declaration stated: Since the Chinese Kuomintang returned to power, under President Ma Ying-jeou’s philosophy of “no unification, no independence, and no force” and the political mutual trust between the cross-Strait governments under the “1992 Consensus”, cross-Strait relations have developed peacefully and vigorously, and overseas Chinese affairs have been actively expanded. The tasks set for this annual meeting in the future are: (1) Based on the fine tradition of "harmony among all nations", strive to promote harmonious coexistence between overseas Chinese and the ethnic groups in the country of residence, and help new immigrants adapt to the new environment and pursue a new life. Encourage overseas Chinese and Chinese to integrate into the local mainstream society, vigorously support overseas Chinese and Chinese to participate in politics, improve their social status and safeguard their legitimate rights and interests. (2) Strengthen liaison and communication with Taiwan and the mainland, promote cross-strait cooperation, and make positive contributions to promoting cross-strait economic development, improving people's lives, promoting democratic politics, and promoting social civilization and progress. (3) Promote Chinese culture, vigorously promote Chinese education in overseas Chinese communities, and use high technology, media, radio, television, and the Internet to promote Chinese culture. For young people, more root-searching and ancestor-seeking activities will be held to increase their interest in learning so that traditional Chinese culture can be passed on from generation to generation. (4) Strengthen the close ties between the Chinese Association, the Chinese Office, the Overseas Chinese Association and overseas Chinese communities in various places, learn from each other’s strengths, cooperate with each other, make progress together, and work hard for the well-being of overseas Chinese. In his report on the overseas Chinese situation, Zhang Zhaohong introduced the history and recent activities of the Phoenix Overseas Chinese Federation to the conference. The chairman of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee, Mr. Wu Yingyi, the chairman of the conference, Mr. Ma Guowei, the secretary-general, Mr. Huang Huangquan, and the representatives present at the conference, presented the Phoenix Overseas Chinese Mission’s history book “Pearl of the Desert” to allow the deeds of advanced figures and local culture and art in Alberta and Phoenix to be more widely publicized and disseminated. Mr. Shen Dachuan of the Overseas Chinese Association Federation made it clear that the book “Pearl of the Desert” will be archived in the library of the association.
