On Tuesday, food safety incidents occurred at two schools in the Phoenix area. Several schoolchildren became ill after eating different foods.
The incident occurred at Incito Charter School at the junction of Van Buren Street and Sarival Avenue in Goodyear. Five students aged 10 to 11 were found to have symptoms such as dizziness and stomachache during lunch time on Tuesday. The nurse in the infirmary discovered that these children had swallowed gummy candies, and the school immediately called the police.
The police station and the fire emergency brigade sent personnel to the scene to check, and no one was sent to the hospital. Police said the candies were given to classmates by a student, but it's unclear whether the student understood the harmful effects of the candies.
The school sent a letter home to the students and parents that day, saying that this was an "unfortunate and isolated incident" and that it would cooperate with the police in further investigation to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
Reactions to consuming cannabis vary from person to person. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, injecting concentrated cannabis oil products is much riskier than inhaling cannabis smoke, and adverse reactions in children are more severe than in adults.
On the same day, three students at Palo Verde Junior High School in Phoenix became ill after eating chili peppers at lunch. One of the students was sent to a local pediatric hospital for further examination at the request of his parents. The other two students went home with their parents to rest after school inspections.
The Washington School District issued a statement confirming the incident.
It seems that the education department needs to review the school’s food safety measures.
