Speaker: Principal Tong. The full name of the principal is Dr. Fawzia Mai Tung. Because she once opened a private school and served as the principal, everyone in the Chinese community in Arizona is accustomed to calling her the principal. She has a doctorate in education and is also a language genius. She is fluent in Chinese, English, French and Arabic and other languages. She has seven children, all of whom are taught at home, and all of them have excellent grades. The older children have obtained multiple doctorates.
Together with the principal, he opened an English reading and writing class at New Oriental Art School, teaching English reading and writing and SAT English reading and writing to grades 2 to 12. In the past six months, Principal Tong has used her own original ten-class teaching method, which has achieved remarkable results. The English reading and writing levels of the children she trained have greatly improved.
In the conventional teaching of English reading and writing, three genres are basically used: narrative, expository, and argumentative. Narratives are the foundation, and children start by reading and writing narratives. In the past six months, the principal's teaching focus has been on narrative writing, and the children who studied with her have made great progress in narrative writing. Next, she will focus on reading and writing expository texts. What most of our children will eventually use is argumentative writing. The SAT reading and writing assessment focuses on argumentative essays. If the children's future major is science and engineering, then it is very important to learn how to write popular science articles.
Reading is the foundation for writing. If you want to write well, you must read more. Through many years of teaching, the principal discovered that children usually read mostly novels and rarely read popular science articles and argumentative essays. As a result, children are very capable of making up stories when writing essays, but their reading and writing skills of expository essays and argumentative essays are relatively weak. So, how should our parents choose reading materials for our children? What kind of newspapers and magazines should families subscribe to, and how should parents lead their children to read together? In this lecture, an education expert and principal will share her experience with you.
