Air bag defect Hyundai Motor recalls more than 220,000 vehicles Hyundai is recalling more than 220,000 2007-2009 Santa Fe SUVs and Sonata sedans because of potential air bag problems. Due to an issue with the passenger classification system in the vehicle, the front passenger airbag in these vehicles may not activate in a crash, as the airbag determines whether it should activate based on the size of the occupant. The federal safety agency said the system may need to be recalibrated to detect "smaller adults." Hyundai Motor Co. is also recalling more than 22,000 sedans from the 2012-2013 model years, authorities said. The curtain side airbags in these cars may have automatically inflated due to a manufacturing error. NHTSA said Hyundai dealers are expected to notify owners that curtain side air bags can be replaced free of charge. Dealers will also update the classified software on the off-road vehicles for free.
