Voters refused to increase taxes and Proposition 204 failed (Alberta Times) Voters in this state rejected Proposition 204, which made the temporary sales tax of 1% a permanent tax. Voters approved a temporary 1% sales tax increase in 2010, with the proceeds used to increase education, highways and social development projects. The temporary tax increase law expires in mid-2013. Supporters say the tax increases fund priorities that the Legislature has neglected, while opponents say the tax increases are unnecessary and only increase the burden on taxpayers and do not help the economic recovery. Another proposal that failed was the so-called "top two" election. Approval of the proposal would mean changing the state's electoral status quo and canceling the primary election. Each party can nominate two candidates to participate in the election, instead of nominating one candidate after the current primaries of each party. Supporters said the proposal would create more bipartisan candidates, while critics said it would weaken political parties.
