The fall semester is about to begin. Is choosing a famous school or a good major equal to half the success in the future? Before answering, you should first look at which university in 2014 led the nation in earning the highest starting salary for graduates? With this data, you may have a reliable reference when choosing employment.

Recently, NerdWallet conducted a sample survey of all 2014 graduates. The data obtained in this way should be more reliable than the salary data reported by those who want to change jobs in the database of salary survey website PayScale. Compared with the 4,500 universities in the United States, this list is far from comprehensive, but it is still very helpful for us to qualitatively grasp the rise and fall of the industry. Through comprehensive analysis, the overall ranking of the top 50 universities and the subject rankings of business, engineering, arts, science, medicine, etc. are listed. Computer science majors at 4 universities were found to have the highest starting salaries, with an average of $68,000. Among them, Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science ranks first on the list with a salary of US$89,800; in addition, the average starting salary of engineering and applied sciences in 20 universities is US$64,000; the average starting salary of the eight popular business schools in previous years is US$60,000.

Interestingly, there is a subtle correspondence between the admission rates and starting salary rankings of computer, engineering, and business schools. According to the admission rate given by ZinchChin, the average admission rate for engineering schools in the starting salary list is 23%, followed by computer science at 17%, and the admission rate for business schools is less than 10%. Business school is difficult to take the exam because it was so popular in the first few years, and by the time you graduate, the relevant majors are no longer so popular. Computer science and engineering are the beneficiaries of the revitalization of industry in the United States after the financial crisis. In the past few years, the entrance examination was easier than that of business schools, and the starting salary after graduation was higher.

Second place: California Institute of Technology (California Institute of Technology) Average salary: US$83,750

After seeing this example, the direction of major selection for Chinese international students is relatively clear, and the situation is very favorable to Chinese students. Because of language and cultural reasons, Chinese born outside the United States are at a disadvantage when engaging in business. Computer science is also at a disadvantage, at least not as innate advantages as Indians. Engineering has much lower requirements for language and cultural background, but with high demand and higher starting salary, it is a good development direction for Chinese. Data shows that engineering colleges do not have strict requirements for TOEFL & SAT scores. Admissions officers focus on students’ creative and analytical abilities, and tuition fees are relatively reasonable.

3. Stanford University, School of Engineering average salary: $74,500

Although computer science has great room for development, this subject has long been occupied by Indians.

Many Chinese study business with the mentality that "business requires less academic ability and is easier to find a job", but this is not the case. The admission requirements for truly excellent business schools are extremely demanding. After you finally graduate, you have to take several financial professional certificates before you can become a small analyst. In the event of an economic crisis, you will lose your job and have to worry about various financial traps.

4. Harvey Mudd College average salary: US$72,500. Of course, the starting salary is only a reference. It also depends on your interests and expertise. The best choice is the one that suits you and follows the rules of development.
