Nissan Motor Co. (NISSAN) is recalling 39,000 2012 Versa sedans in the United States and Canada because the small car's drivetrain could slip out of park if the driver does not apply the brakes. The recalled cars were manufactured between June 9 last year and January 13 this year and were equipped with automatic transmissions or continuously variable automatic transmissions. 36,600 of them were sold in the United States. Nissan sent a letter to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) saying that the cars could slide out of Park if the brakes are not applied due to interference between the shift knob and the gear lever. If the driver fails to apply the brake, he or she may accidentally shift the car into gear, increasing the risk of a crash or injuring bystanders. NHTSA stipulates that drivers must depress the brake when starting the car before they can shift into gear. Nissan said there have been no reports of crashes or injuries caused by the Versa's problems. Nissan will proactively notify car owners in the near future, replace parts for these cars free of charge, and ensure that the cars operate normally. Separately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on the 10th that it was investigating reports that the driver's door of the 2007 Toyota Camry sedan and RAV4 SUV could catch fire. The investigation could affect up to 830,000 vehicles, which have not yet been recalled.
