Thursday (yesterday) at the Tucson jail A fight between about 200 inmates forced the Tucson prison to close for several days while authorities investigated, Arizona corrections officials said.

At about 5:30 pm on Thursday, September 20, the group fight began in the yard of the Santa Rita Unit of the Arizona State Prison Tucson General Prison. Tactical support teams and prison staff had the fight in the yard under control within half an hour, said Beal, the corrections spokesman for Arizona.

The yard was secured and contained, with one prison staff suffering rib injuries and multiple inmates injured.

The prison has 5,150 beds divided into three areas: "small," "medium" and "close custody", he said. The Santa Rita unit has 768 beds, and 727 inmates were present during the gang fight that day.
