> 12 demonstrators were arrested at the SRP Building in Tempe (Alberta Times) On December 2, the Police Department arrested 12 demonstrators suspected of illegally invading SRP Electric Company’s Tempe administration building. At least 75 demonstrators began gathering at the entrance and sidewalk outside the SRP building around 10:30 a.m. on Friday to protest plans to mine coal in the mountains of Navajo Autonomous Region in northern Arizona, which is being developed by SRP and Peabody Energy. Demonstrators say coal mining will destroy the local natural environment and cause health problems for indigenous people. Peabody Energy is the majority shareholder of the Navajo Generating Station.
