The Otis elevator broke down again and 11 Canton Fair guests were trapped for nearly an hour. (Reporting by Yang Qiwei, Special Correspondent of the Alberta Times) The Otis elevator that was out of service for some reason on the 5th of this month, causing 42 tourists to be trapped in the Canton Tower for an hour, broke down again on the 16th, causing 11 Canton Fair guests to be trapped in the elevator for nearly an hour. On October 16, the third day of the Canton Fair, 11 Canton Fair guests staying at the Bangtai International Apartment in Guangzhou were taking the Otis elevator back to their rooms when the elevator suddenly malfunctioned and fell rapidly from the 5th floor to the 3rd floor. Eleven Canton Fair guests were frightened and trapped in an elevator for nearly an hour. The elevator involved was an Otis brand. Among the 11 Canton Fair guests stranded, three were foreigners. Mr. Chen, a trapped guest, told reporters that the elevator suddenly stopped when it reached the fifth floor, and then "suddenly fell without any warning." It is understood that the elevator fell for a few seconds and then stopped. The display screen in the elevator showed that it had stopped at the third floor. Everyone pressed the door button but there was no response, so they had to call the phone in the elevator for help. Twenty minutes later, at about 8 pm that night, Xizi Otis elevator maintenance personnel arrived at the scene, pried open the elevator door from the outside, and rescued 11 guests. According to Otis maintenance personnel, the accident was caused by overloading. However, many trapped guests said that the rated load standard displayed inside the elevator was 1,000kg and 13 people, which was not exceeded at the time, and the elevator did not issue an overload warning. Everyone was not satisfied with the explanation given by the maintenance staff and expressed their willingness to weigh themselves to see if they were overweight.
