Phoenix mother of 11-month-old child accused of shaking child to critical condition An 11-month-old Phoenix girl is in critical condition and is suspected to have suffered serious injuries because her mother, Maria A. Rivera, shook her, according to detectives with the Phoenix Police Department. The reason why the police suspected the 21-year-old mother Maria Rivera was because she did not send her child to the hospital for medical treatment more than an hour after the incident. At about 9pm on Tuesday, hospital staff called the police because the child's injuries were inconsistent with the mother's explanation. Patrol officers responded immediately and contacted detectives to investigate. Rivera is being held in the Maricopa County Jail and will likely be charged with two counts of child abuse, officials said. Rivera's other two children, ages 1 month and 2 years old, will be referred to child protective services. Police said a third child, the child of Rivera's sister, was being taken into the custody of Rivera's mother and child protective services were also taken into custody.
