Fast food workers in 100 U.S. cities went on strike on Thursday, demanding a minimum wage of 15 yuan an hour According to CNN, the main focus is to increase wages in the fast food industry...
According to Cable News Network (CNN), the strike movement with the main goal of raising wages in the fast food industry began in New York City last year and gradually expanded. In August this year, fast food workers in 60 cities went on strike.
The National Restaurant Association claimed that the demonstrations were "a public relations campaign coordinated by national union organizations," and that past protests had actually involved few restaurant workers.
A McDonald's spokeswoman said Thursday's incident "was not a strike," but rather a group of people organized by outside groups to hold rallies at McDonald's restaurants and other locations.
The restaurant industry criticized the movement, claiming that increasing starting wages would hurt employment and raise prices.
This strike movement is supported by the Service Employees International Union. The MoveOn.org petition, which has received 50,000 online signatures, calls for raising the minimum wage in the fast food industry to $15 an hour so that Americans can live a living.
Fifty-three members of Congress signed a letter on Wednesday to fast-food chains McDonald's, Wendy's, Domino's Pizza, Burger King and Yum! Brands, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, supporting higher wages for workers.
Those congressmen said in the letter, "We proudly stand with workers as they continue to fight for an economy that works for everyone."
Previous reports said that fast food restaurant workers in about 100 cities across the United States plan to strike this Thursday. Organizers say it will be the largest-scale action by fast-food workers for higher wages.
