Two students in Arizona, USA, were punished for fighting and were punished by sitting hand in hand on the playground. After the incident, some witnesses posted photos of the two holding hands to the Internet, sparking heated discussions.
Two students at Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona, USA, were punished for fighting in physical education class. Principal Tim Richard gave the students two options: suspend classes for nine days or sit hand in hand on the playground for an hour in front of everyone. The two chose the latter because the suspension of classes would not only alarm parents, but would also leave a record on the final report card.
>High school student Bretny Samir, who witnessed the entire punishment process, said: "The classmates around them were laughing at them, calling their names and asking, 'Are you gay?'" Another student said: "I have been in the U.S. ROTC. This is similar to their handling method, and it really worked."
What the two did not expect was that a photo of them awkwardly holding hands and sitting with their faces covered was taken by the surrounding classmates and caused a sensation on social networks. One of those punished, 14-year-old Charles Rocket, later said in an interview that he was too embarrassed to go to school the next day. When a reporter asked him what he learned from this incident, he replied: "Never fight in school."
However, not everyone agrees with this approach. After seeing the photo, many netizens commented that this approach was "inappropriate". Others commented that such naming and punishment would be considered to "encourage everyone to bully others."
The Mesa City Public Schools Local Board also issued a statement afterwards, saying that it "will not tolerate" similar practices by the school and will learn more about the situation and will re-examine the deficiencies in school discipline and rules with the school administrators.
